Schlage: Manufacturer of Quality Door Hardware for Over 100 Years

Beautiful Interior and Exterior Door Hardware Offering Advanced Security and Technology

When we started Elevate Door and Trim, we worked to fill a need in the central Florida market for a company that is a one-stop-shop for homeowners looking for interior and exterior doors, molding, trim, and hardware.

We recognized from the beginning that door hardware is a tremendously important element on two levels. First, your door hardware is an important element of design aesthetics. Much like cabinet pulls and knobs in the kitchen or bathroom, your entry door and interior door hardware is the “jewelry” that gives your home a sense of style, as well as functionality. Second, your door hardware is a critical element that helps keep your family safe.

When it came time to find a manufacturing partner for door hardware, we did our research, and all roads lead to Schlage. Schlage has been building and selling locksets and door hardware for over 100 years and is undoubtedly the top manufacturer of door locks hardware. As the company motto says, “Schlage didn't invent the lock. They perfected it!”

Schlage Makes Beautiful Door Hardware and State-of-the-Art Locksets

The Schlage Lock Company was born in San Francisco in 1920, and today a century later, it's now one of the most recognized trademarks in the United States. Over its history, the company is responsible for developing some of the most innovative locking solutions globally. Even today, Schlage continues to play a major role as an innovator in the evolution of security products and hardware.

Walter Schlage was a mechanical engineer born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. He received his first patent in 1909. Walter began experimenting with electrical switches during his free time and eventually developed a two-button door lock that was able to control the lights in a room. One button turned the lights on, and the other turned them off. In 1911 he was awarded his second patent for a push-button doorbell.

In 1920, Walter left his job at Western Electric and opened up his own lock shop in San Francisco. Schlage incorporated the business, and the Schlage Key and Lock Company began manufacturing a locking door handle with a central push button.

By 1923, the company had grown and moved to a new location, and by 1925, Schlage was manufacturing nearly 20,000 push button locks per month. In 1940 Schlage was presented the Modern Pioneer Award for his innovative work as an electrical engineer and mechanical inventor.

In 1946 Walter Schlage died, but the company continued to grow after his death. The new CEO began to acquire several other companies, including the California Lock Company and LCN Closers. These acquisitions expanded the company's product line with a range of hardware products, including door wraps, hinges, strike plates, and more.

In 1974 the company was purchased by Ingersoll Rand and went global the following year. Schlage moved its corporate operations to Colorado Springs in 1997. Today, Walter Schlage's legacy lives on. Schlage remains an industry leader in research and development, and Schlage products are some of the most innovative and affordable door hardware products on the market today.
